What is
EMRA 2023-2050?

The Mining Strategy for the Well-being of the Antofagasta Region (EMRA 2023-2050) is an innovative long-term planning instrument from the Antofagasta Regional Government, approved on March 13, 2024.

Its objective is to transform mining into a holistic engine for social, economic, and environmental progress.

Driven by Regional Governor Ricardo Díaz and the Regional Council since 2022, EMRA 2023-2050 is based on OECD recommendations, seeking fair, sustainable, and inclusive mining practices.

One of its greatest achievements has been uniting civil society, mining companies, academia, and the public sector to jointly define the region’s future.

Antofagasta, Chile: A Global Mining Powerhouse

The Antofagasta Region, located in northern Chile, is a world leader in copper production and a key player in the growing production of lithium. This industry is vital for Chile’s economy and the global energy transition.

Beyond its mineral wealth, Antofagasta boasts unique natural landscapes, from the world’s driest desert (the Atacama) to a vibrant coastline, and skies ideal for astronomical observation.

Recognizing mining’s profound impact, the region is committed to ensuring its prosperity benefits all citizens while upholding the highest environmental and social standards. This is where EMRA plays its role.

Vision

To achieve greater well-being in the Antofagasta Region, built upon a competitive and environmentally responsible mining sector.

Five Strategic Objectives: Guiding Our Path

To transform this vision into reality, EMRA 2023-2050 has defined five strategic objectives to be achieved in the coming decades:

01.

Improve Quality of Life for all communities and indigenous peoples.

02.

Promote Sustainable Mining, including the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

03.

Strengthen Regional Businesses to boost their participation in the mining value chain.

04.

Enhance Public Institutional Framework and Governance for a more competitive and sustainable mining sector.

05.

Reinforce the Knowledge and Innovation Ecosystem in the mining value chain.

Transversal Agreements: Our Shared Commitments

To ensure that the EMRA’s vision and objectives are met, the Regional Government has secured concrete agreements with mining companies and other key regional stakeholders.

These commitments, totaling 19 transversal agreements, are organized across four key dimensions: Environmental, Social, Economic, and Institutional.

Their progress will be evaluated annually and communicated transparently to the public.

Robust Governance: A Permanent Dialogue

To guarantee its effective implementation, EMRA 2023-2050 features a permanent multi-sectoral dialogue instance.

This collaborative body, known as the Governance of the Mining Strategy for the Well-being of the Antofagasta Region, was formally constituted on March 22, 2024.

It brings together key stakeholders to ensure continuous collaboration, transparency, and accountability.

EMRA 2023-2050: Your Roadmap to a Sustainable Future

The EMRA defines clear short, medium, and long-term goals for each strategic objective, supported by specific strategic initiatives.

It is the definitive roadmap to build a future of well-being and sustainable development for the entire Antofagasta Region.
